Saturday – 16/06/2018 – Fischerinsel  Spittelmarkt – Postcard Photography

This is a bring a camera and shoot event.

A leisurely promenade around Cölln

Have you ever wondered why the Berlin area is relatively flat, with so many lakes, all with glorious beaches and every dug up street reveals a foundation of golden sand?

The Spreeinsel is but one of the many visible clues to to Berlin’s geological past, a vast sand plateau formed by the melt water at the end of the last ice-age, 18,000 years ago.

The Fischerinsel (Fisher island) is the name given to the southern end of the Spreeinsel which is situated on the river Spree in the very heart of the city,

It belongs to one of the oldest parts of the medieval town of Cölln and was originally the area where the fisher families and boatman lived.

It wasn’t until 1709 that the twin towns of Cölln and Altberlin were merged into what we now know as Berlin.

Postcard photography

If you have ever looked carefully at a postcard, you may have noticed that it has two main characteristics:

    1. It usually depicts some sort of landmark, such as a cathedral, bridge or other tourist attraction.
    2. It is in total focus, everything from the foreground to the background is sharp.

How to achieve this though?

    1. Find a suitable tourist attraction.
    2. Set the camera up to capture an image with a very large depth of field.

But how do we know how to set the aperture to obtain the correct depth of field?

The secret is in using the “hyperfocal distance”, which is actually a lot easier than it sounds.

Public transport:
